Why Ontario Parks Matter

July 19, 2022 2 Comments

Have you asked yourself Why Ontario Parks Matter? Provincial parks matter because of their importance to recreation, science, and education. With over 300 parks in Ontario that adds up to 300 opportunities to get outside and have fun, study, and learn about the world around us.

  • Bluffers Park Lake Ontario
  • Park playground swings

Recreation At The Parks

Provincial Parks offer cold season and warm season recreation to numerous visitors each year. Outdoor recreation is a great way to de-stress for both the body and mind. They offer safe, outdoor, space for families and individuals to discover and adventure (in a very budget-friendly way). Whether it be a morning hike, an afternoon bike ride or a week-long camping trip, provincial parks are go-to destinations for many.

DID YOU KNOW? Some Ontario Parks offer roofed accommodation to make your camping trip a little easier. Warm season campers can reserve cabins, cottages, and soft sided shelters. Cold season campers can reserve yurts.

How does this impact you directly?

  • Discover parks in your area or road trip to an escape within the province
  • Enjoy a beach day with friends
  • Try car camping
  • Take your dog (with a few exceptions)
  • Venture into backcountry camping

TIP: Some parks require reservations which can be done by phone or online and they may be fees for certain activities

Science At The Parks

Provincial Parks, like Ontario Parks, are protected areas which are important to ecosystems and biodiversity. Experts and amateurs have opportunities to study and research earth science and life science right in their own backyard.

How does this impact you directly?

Here are a few examples of how the science of parks influences your life:

  • we learn more about invasive species
  • experts study fish populations
  • we examine human use impacts
  • learn more about clean air and water in our province

Education At The Parks

From education centres to “learn to camp” programs to nature programs there are many education elements available to schools and the public.

What are the educational opportunities at provincial parks?

  • Examine wildlife displays
  • Find out why “messy” beaches can be great shelter for animals
  • learn about fires
  • study climate change
  • learn about the history within a specific region

I went to a number of Ontario parks as I child and now that I do not live there, I hanker to get back.
