How To Make Salt Dough

March 25, 2020 13 Comments

Here is a quick and easy stay home activity: How to Make Salt Dough. And it’s inexpensive too! They last a long time (or until you drop one). This is part of a continuing Parent Club series on Gifts Kids Can Make. Here’s how to make salt dough…

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup fine salt
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • Cookie sheet
  • Non-stick liner
  • Pre-heated oven 200C

(you can double recipe to make more)

Mix salt, flour and water in a bowl. I recommend, once it comes together, to use your hands and knead it until it becomes a dough.

Line a cookie sheet with a rubber liner (or any non-stick paper). Roll bits of salt dough into balls. We pressed the balls down to make snowmen.

Bake the salt dough in the 200C pre-heated oven for 2 hours (actually, I baked them for an hour…then turned the oven off and forgot about them ’till the next day – worked fine). Should you want to hang them – poke a hole (use a straw) in the top of each decoration before you bake them.

Once cooked, use a permanent marker (on the back side of the salt dough) to mark the occasion and date.

You could use paint to decorate – we opted for markers and glitter glue. Then we covered them with podgy (a type of mod podge).  From measuring to pouring to sculpting to decorating these were 100% kids-hands-on.

I made these on the weekend with the kids and we made stars to hang on tree and around the house, and did hand and feet prints too with them!
