Meringue Ghosts

October 9, 2014 24 Comments

These meringue ghosts are fang-tastic! This recipe is seriously easy and perfect for your next coffin coffee break. These little devils…er…I mean ghosts…are crunchy on the outside and super sweet and chewy on the inside.  If you want to be the Ghostess with the mostess this Halloween – you have to try these meringue ghosts…

Meringue Ghosts

Meringue Ghosts

Note: this recipe makes tens upon tens upon tens of meringues (think: Halloween party or class treat).

You will need:

Meringue Ghosts
Author: Parent Club
Prep time: 15 mins
Cook time: 1 hour 30 mins
Total time: 1 hour 45 mins
Serves: 24
These Meringue Ghosts are the perfect Halloween party dessert.
Ingredients
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/8 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • mini chocolate chips (to use as Ghost eyes and Ghost mouth)
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 200F (100 C).
  2. Beat egg whites (obviously in a bowl) with cream of tartar (until you see stiff peaks).
  3. Add in sugar, slowly (like a spoonful at a time). Continue beating. Add in Vanilla. Stop beating when peaks hold a stiff form.
  4. Line a cookie sheet (1 used three cookie sheets for this recipe) with parchment paper. Using a spoon, drop meringue mixture onto parchment paper . Add 2 mini chocolate chips as eyes to each of the meringue ghosts.
  5. Bake meringue ghosts in oven for 1 1/2 hours. Then turn off oven and let then stay in oven for 1 hour more. Let cool.
  6. Store in air tight container (tip: re-use the parchment paper as layers between the meringue ghosts in the air tight containers).
Side-note: cream of tartar is found in the spice area of the grocery store (I note this because it took me forever to find it)

Store in air tight container (tip: re-use the parchment paper as layers between the meringue ghosts in the air tight containers).

Trust me…you will be bewitched, bothered and bewildered by these sweet treats!

I was thinking…I bet you could also make meringue “bones” by spreading them out into a bone shape.

I thought they were difficult too – but really easy actually. I would make these with my daughter (and you know if you include kid help – it has to be easy!)

I love meringues but I’ve always been afraid to try and make them myself. You’ve inspired me to give it a try! Thanks.
