Red Fruit Salad

August 22, 2019

Red Fruit Salad…because colours matter to kids and their snacks. I was inspired when hosting our last play date and created a winner-of-a-snack for kids…Red Fruit Salad. It was easy, healthy, and yummy…plus, the kids thought I knocked it out of the ballpark when I served it in ice cream cones…

Fruit in ice cream cones

Red Fruit Salad

Yes, this is insanely easy. Shamelessly-so really. But go to the grocery store and ask kids too look for fruits which are red…you have a boredom buster and a snack in one. 🙂

Ingredients
  • Strawberries (washed and sliced)
  • Seedless red grapes (washed – cut or whole)
  • Red delicious apple (washed and cubed – idared apples are yummy too)
  • Optional: ice cream cones (to hold fruit)
Instructions
  1. Wash strawberries, grapes, apple. Cut fruits into bite size pieces. Put in container. Mix. Let sit 30 minutes.
  2. Spoon a serving into ice cream cones.
  3. Eat.

Grown-up version: red fruit salad in non-ice-cream-cone format…

red fruit salad

So many possibilities…green fruit salad (green apples, green grapes), orange fruit salad (oranges, cantaloupe), black and pink fruit salad (watermelon, blackberries). It’s a rainbow of snack ideas.

And absolutely turn this into a grocery store/farmer’s market scavenger hunt with your kids. It gets them busy while you shop and it gives them control over their (healthy) snack options. You could do red one week and green the next. And then, end the summer with the whole rainbow of fruit salad!

You could totally turn this into an EASY SCHOOL LUNCH LIST item and rotating the colour of fruit salad every week for four weeks.

Aside: serving fruit in ice cream cones is fun…but I was wondering about how to turn this recipe into gluten-free…if you have any suggestions on how to create hand held fruit salad sans wheat ice cream cones…let me know!

This is such a great idea to inspire little children to eat good fruit from an ice-cream cone. It’s a genius idea that gets them to eat something delicious and healthy in a coneas oposed to eating something less healthy for them.I love this and they looks so appealing too.

Making different types of fruit salad is a great idea. It is helpful for kids to learn colours too. Although< I wouldn't use an ice cream cone since my kids won't eat them lol. They would prefer a cup or a bowl of yogurt. You can get gluten free ice cones as well by the way 🙂
