With April being IBS awareness month I wanted to share my 5 Tips for Travelling with IBS which might make travel easier for some of you. I have lived with IBS for years and travel always scared me. What if my IBS triggers?! Instead of being scared…now I get prepared. Here are my 5 Tips for Travelling With IBS…
5 Tips for Travelling with IBS
- Research your travel itinerary and destination. I google airports, public transit, cities and hotels to know where the washroom facility status. And my family even helps me “Mom, washroom is over there if you need it“. Knowing washroom locations can ease stress (and be super helpful if you need them quick).
- Avoid your trigger foods. Eat well on vacation, eat healthy and balanced, but avoid those foods you know will kill your travel plans. I, personally, tend to go for the graze-and-go option where I eat mini-meals throughout the day. Yes, it means I don’t enjoy the all-you-can-eat buffet at the resort…but I’d rather be spending time with my family exploring the city then spending time in the washroom alone.
- Take Align every day — and TAKE it with you. Common issues such as diet, changes in routine, travel and stress can disrupt your natural healthy intestinal flora. Taking Align® once a day, every day provides probiotic bacteria that contribute to a natural healthy intestinal flora. Align® is a daily probiotic supplement that provides live bacteria to benefit health, relieving and managing symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). When taken daily, Align® capsules provide ongoing relief of IBS symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, gas, and bloating. Yes, I’ve taken Align and yes, I’ve taken it with me when I travel. It’s a simple, easy, way I can be proactive with my IBS management.
- Pack an IBS-friendly wardrobe. If I feel pressure against my tummy — it makes me think IBS. So I opt to pack a wardrobe which doesn’t put pressure on my abdomen. Flowy dresses, tunic tops and leggings, pull on shorts/capris/pants. Plus, they are super comfy and offer multiple mix and max fashion options.
- Don’t stress. Easier said than done for people with IBS. But travel anxiety can be a trigger all on it’s own. Â Try not to overthink. Shift your focus. I always have some sort of a bracelet on. Not for fashion (though my bracelet collection is kind of cute), but when I get worried/anxious/stress…it’s a grown-up fidget tool to keep my mind and hands busy. Sounds crazy but the simple action of touch helps move my mind from “OMG my IBS is triggering” to something calmer. And yes, sometimes when I travel I do have to find that washroom. Stat. And that’s OK.
