Free Activities: Boredom Buster Ideas for Kids

October 12, 2016 20 Comments

“Mom, I’m bored!” – ever hear that? Be gone the boredom in your home! Here is a list of Free Activities: Boredom Buster Ideas for Kids which is sure to entertain kids young and old.  It’s a mix of some inside activity ideas and some outside activity ideas (because you never know when the boredom is going to hit)…

Free Activities: Boredom Buster Ideas for Kids

Free Activities: Boredom Buster Ideas for Kids

Quiet activities

Reading, drawing, and painting are good quiet activities for kids (“quiet” as in sitting in one place…I know kids are rarely quiet in the silence-sense).

Outside activities

Playing in the backyard is good year-round. Kick a soccer ball. Run through the sprinkler. Throw snowballs. Make a snowman.

Going to the park (with a grown-up of course) is always a hit. Take a snack and make it a picnic.

Scavenger hunts are always fun. I have a free printable that you might like.

Sidewalk chalk is pretty awesome. Hop skotch. 4 square. Or just creative drawing.

Active Activities.

Building a fort (indoor with chairs and blankets or outdoor with found stuff) is awesome when you have big kids who can make it for/with little kids.

Playing with the toys you already have around the house is a very active activity (so get out those cars and wheel them around the living room).

A dance party…always fun. Caroline Fernandez and Enrique

Reading Activities

BINGO (obvious reasons)

And going to the library…not only a field trip but an opportunity to read together.

Parent and Child Activities

From playing a board game together (Connect 4 or Go Fish are favourites here) to doing an experiment together (I have lots of easy experiments in my Boredom Busters book) to baking something en famille (try this TRIPLE BATCH CINNAMON COFFEE CAKE recipe)…you can bust boredom with fun.

If I have all 3 of my kids at home there is usually some form of music/dance party/baking/toy playing going on. If it’s just me and my youngest…it’s reading together (or at least me reading to him…this is the year he FINALLY learns to read himself).

Yes, kids should get bored sometimes (it teaches them self-starting skills in learning how to entertain themselves). But sometimes, a few boredom busting suggestions are all you need to turn that boredom into activity.

I hate it when the kids say there is nothing to do. I used to love Building a fort when I was a kid. I will have to get them to build one with me this weekend. It is perfect for rainy days.

We have a jar with boredom buster ideas for when the kids can not find anything to do. I will have to add a few of these to the jar.

We like to go for a hike when the kids are bored. We always have a good tome looking for treasures.

These are fantastic boredom busters. The next time the kids are bored I will have to build a fort with them.

My kids love to go on Scavenger hunts. When I see they are getting bored I will hide treasure somewhere in the yard or house and give them clues to find it.

I’m going to have to try some of these. We used to play board games and cards but we have gotten away from that.

I hate when my kids act like they are bored. I should print these ideas to remind them there are plenty of things to keep them busy.

These are all great ideas. I love it when you can find some great ideas for kids when they get bored. They may get bored easily, but it’s also easy to find something to entertain them too.

Children get bored quickly these days so it’s good to have a few ideas at hand. Strange though, since I can remember playing for hours on end with a construction set.
