Find a Music Teacher Using the National Music Teacher Directory and make your life easier. I wish I had known about the National Music Teacher Directory when I was looking for a guitar teacher for my daughter. I wanted her to take music lessons…but didn’t know where to start…
Why music lessons?…
- Music lessons provide many benefits to children, including in areas of intellectual, social, and creative potential.
- Benefits of music education include improved language abilities, increased emotional resilience, increased empathy, increased attention span and focus, increased self-confidence.
- Many researchers have linked music lessons with improved IQ and academic performance.
When I was looking for guitar lessons, my #1 search method was word-of-mouth. I received a few good leads…but the thing is…the people I asked weren’t people in my neighbourhood. So their recommendations were all way out of my way.
Also, my husband wanted to take beginner lessons with my daughter (which I thought was a great father/daughter activity). So we had to find a music teacher who could do a private/small group lesson after work hours (not just a child after-school lesson).
Eventually, we did find a guitar teacher who could teach father/daughter in the early evenings. I can attest – these weekly music lessons brought them closer together. They also had fun practicing together on the weekends. They were focused learners with great appreciation of their instruments.
Today, when I looked on the National Music Teacher Directory – within seconds I found 13 guitar teachers within 5 kilometres of my home. Aside, I also found 100 piano teachers within 5 km of my home…I’ve always wanted to learn how to play piano!
The Directory is better than my word-of-mouth research because you get so much more information from a much more trusted referrer. Straight off – you see if the teacher is RCM Certified. You get their name and contact info (and I love being able to email them). It’s noted in their address if they work from a private studio or public music centre. And finally, their teacher profiles and specialist designations help you decide whether they are the right music teachers for your needs.
About the National Music Teacher Directory…
All of the teachers in the National Music Teacher Directory follow The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program – a comprehensive and effectively sequenced system of music study and national standard of assessment that provides the strongest foundation for well-rounded musical training, from beginner to advanced levels.

I didn’t know this registry existed. I like that it shows if they are certified and what they specialize in.
It’s hard to know who to trust so that’s a great place to start. I have moved a lot so people in my position would really value this too.
I wish I knew about the two years ago when we were looking! I would have loved to see what they offered on here! Thanks for sharing this!
What a great tool! We were looking for a music teacher for my daughter last year. We had the toughest time finding one. She still could use one. Taking advantage of this would be a smart move!
I did not know about this –what a great idea! my daughter is now learning how to play the flute for the very first time . I’ll definitely check this site out .
Music lessons are an amazing way for kids to be creative. My kids went threw a few instruments before they found their passions.
This sounds like a great way to pick a music teacher. My kids loved taking music lessons. I would love to lean how to play the piano.
This sounds great for those interested in music. I hope that my girls will want to play something when they get older. I think music is great!
Such a great resource! So hard to find a great music teacher!
This is perfect timing! I’ve been looking into music lessons for my boys but haven’t found many around us (which is odd considering we live in the suburbs of a big city and there are plenty of people here!)
This is fabulous! We have a guitar playing self taught 16-year old grandson. He’d love to take professional lessons and piano lessons too. And… our 13-year old grandson takes violin lessons from our niece. We had an in for that because I imagine we wood need a directory to find a violin teacher.
This is so cool! My daughter is fortunate to have her grandfather to teach her how to play the guitar.
Love this! When we move next year I get to take my mom’s piano to our new home. I can;t wait to get my kids in lessons!
We’ve been wanting to find a guitar teacher for my daughter. Great resource!
I love this. I never knew it existed, but it is fantastic. Music helps us all come together.
Thanks for sharing this. Each member of our family of six plays multiple instruments and some also sing so you will not find a bigger advocate of kids music education than in me.
This is so helpful! My daughter wants to learn the piano but I had no idea where to start for lessons.
This is great timing. My son wanted to look into piano/guitar lessons and we didn’t know where to start. Thanks for the heads up and this super resource.
