5 Tips To Promote Kids’ Creativity

June 13, 2016 34 Comments

These 5 Tips To Promote Kids’ Creativity will help engage kids’ creative sides (as well as help you cheer lead them to be life long creators). Why should parents promote creativity in kids? Well, it’s creative (which allows you to be productive and artistic — both at the same time). It requires focus (short spurts or longer times). It encourages kids to make decisions (which colour – red or blue?). Here are my 5 Tips To Promote Kids’ Creativity…

5 Tips To Promote Kids' Creativity

5 Tips To Promote Kids’ Creativity

  1. Put out an invitation to be creative. Think: art caddy filled with crayons and paper on the kitchen table. Passing your phone to your child so he/she can take pictures. Making a date to go to a pottery studio. Creativity starts with opportunity. The more creative opportunities your child has…the more inclined they will be to do creative things.
  2. Make creating a celebration with friends. Think: pottery painting birthday party for your child at Crock A Doodle! Interactive, safe, and so much fun; kids of all ages will enjoy getting creative and a bit messy in their hands-on pottery activities. Bonus: you don’t have to clean up!croc a doodle
  3. Don’t limit creativity. Hold back your opinion on what colours your child chooses or how abstract their design may be….part of being creative is decision-making (and we too often snow plow our kids’ decisions). Instead of creating a box for your child to work within…encourage them to think outside the box! Discover. Explore. Create.
  4. Creativity isn’t just for kindergarten. As our kids’ grow…we often put aside the arts n’ crafts supplies. However, the increased interest grown-up colouring books proves creativity goes well beyond kindergarten. Tweens and teens should be encouraged to get creative (solo or in a group) as it provides a great opportunity for self-expression and stress relief.
  5. Integrate creativity at home and on vacation. I was so happy we visited CROCK A DOODLE, BLUE MOUNTAIN, when we visited from Toronto for a weekend…not only was it a fun creative opportunity for the kids…it created keepsakes I still have (and every time I look at them — I think of that staycation weekend). Also, I am super happy that the Crock A Doodle staff encouraged me to get my son’s hand print on a mug…it is the only hand print item we have (of any of the kids)!

Think about ways you can promote your kids’ creativity this summer and all year long!

I have always promoted creativity with my daughter. We have had a craft room on both our last two houses. I love to see her still in there and making something wonderful!

May I also suggest promoting free play in your household, outside and with friends. I find if you allow kids some unstructured play time, they will find creative ways to be imaginative.

My kids are very creative and love working with their hands. At birthday parties we make some sort of neat craft instead of a treat bag and the kids are always so proud.

Great ideas, thanks for sharing. There’s a pottery shop near my daughter’s where they often go with their children to use their imagination – I got a lovely cup that they had decorated for me. 🙂
