Class Pot Luck diner-partage ideas

December 11, 2015

These Class Pot Luck diner-partage ideas might be useful to bookmark (or print) for the times when your son or daughter comes home with the “We’re doing a pot luck” letter from class.

Aside: dîner–partage also known as repas partage are the French translations of “pot luck”. A very North American concept (thus the translations are Quebecois in origin). My kids’ go to French school and thus the dîner–partage reference.

First off, obviously you need to stay away from prohibited foods in schools – namely anything with nuts, lots of sugar, pop/soda, and junk food.  I leave it to the parents of kids’ with restricted diets (i.e. gluten free, dairy free, egg free, sugar free, lactose free) to send foods which they know will be safe for their kids. That said…let’s look at our list.

Cheese and crackers are easy. Marble cheese and cheddar (mild, medium or not-too-old) are kid-friendly choices. You could also do mozzarella bites.

Fruit slices are healthy and easily portioned off. Try to stay away from fruits which brown easily (pears, some apples). Send bananas whole. Cut strawberries in half (and take off the green part – kids will try to eat it if you don’t take it off).

Aside: Pre-cut what you can at home and send the pot luck foods in air tight containers. It will make the teacher’s life a whole lot easier!

Carbs like mini-pita and bagels will fill the kids up nicely (you could also send a pot of homemade jam to marry with the carbs).

Unsweetened applesauce and yogurt are healthy but will require a spoon. Our school has litter-less pot lucks so each kid has to bring in their own plate, cup, spoon and fork in a resealable bag (and then it comes back home to be washed).

French toast sticks are easy to cook up at home, cut into sticks, and sent to be enjoyed.

And for drinks…water is always my #1 (at our school each kid takes a refillable water bottle). As a treat, apple juice, orange juice and/or milk are healthy options.
