Don’t let good food go bad. Save money and time by using these simple Food Protection Tips to store the food you love. From school lunch to freezer and a few things in between – here’s how to keep your groceries fresh.
Food Protection Tip: Keep leftovers fresh by putting them into food protection bags right away. Last night’s pizza? Went straight into sandwich size GLAD zipper bags to today’s school lunch. I normally use GLAD containers (makes for a litterless lunch which lessens our ecologial footprint and is so easily washable). However, for field trips (like today) I send zipper bags as it makes for less to carry for my little ones (some times lightening the load is a good thing).
Food Protection Tip: Don’t waist leftovers when you can save them. Oh the number of times I’ve bought a block of cheddar cheese because it was on sale…only to use half…put the other half in the open packaging back in the fridge…and come back (weeks later) to find I am the owner of hard, moldy cheese. No more! Now when I make my famous mac n’ cheese (famous in my house at least). I put the other half of the cheddar cheese in a GLAD food bag and then into the freezer. Yes, you can freeze cheese (my French mother-in-law gave me that tip).
Food Protection Tip: Think beyond the food storage bag. Look at my awesome way to keep muffins fresh! Put GLAD Press’n Seal on top of your muffin pan. Need to take muffins to school?! This is my new transportation muffin mode too!
Unlike traditional cling film and plastic wrap, Press ‘n Seal wrap actually seals to surfaces like paper, plastic and wood. So you can create custom shaped bags to store and freeze food in individual portions. Get GLAD coupons here.
Food Protection Tip: buy in season and freeze in food protection bags. This not only saves you money (busy fruit off season can add up) it also helps you enjoy the great taste of seasonal fruit. Remember my Strawberry Muffin Recipe? I buy strawberries in season, wash and cut them…and store them in GLAD freezer bags. This way – when I’m baking (you should try my Berry Burst Coffee Cake Recipe – so good!)or making a smoothie I can add my favourite berries right from the freezer. Easy and inexpensive! Double win.
Why throw away money when good food goes bad? It’s a waste not just for our family budgets but adds to our compost bins. Wrap your produce as soon as it gets home. Example: my freezer is full of cut leeks in food protections bags. I wash and cut leaks as soon as I get them home from the grocery shopping. I store them in the freezer. Then, when I making soups or stews – I add in a frozen handful. It makes my life easier.
The way my boys eat, I rarely have leftovers, but these are great tips for when I do.
Come to my house (we always have leftovers! I double cook)
I’m extremely picky about my food and use tons of ziplock baggies to store my food. I prefer them over plastic bowls with lids because they don’t leak.
We freeze cheese often- we buy the big blocks and hand slice them for sandwiches then freeze the rest. Those strawberry muffins look delicious!
The strawberry muffins happen to freeze well too 😉
Cooking for 3 means a lot of left overs! Great ways to preserve food and save a little money!
saving $ is always good
