Family-Friendly New Year’s Eve Tips

The kids DON’T have to stay up ’til midnight to do the New Year’s Eve countdown. You can do it at noon. Or Dinner. Or bedtime. It’ doesn’t have to be the new year to do the countdown.

I’ve been at a restaurant on New Year’s Eve where they did a 12pm countdown for kids. They brought out party hats and noisemakers and did the countdown. It was fun. Then, dessert was eaten and everyone went home.

In year’s past, we’ve always included the kids in New Year’s Eve celebrations. I make a fancy dinner. We all put on “fancy clothes”. We set the kitchen table for company (who this year…will just be us). And we even let the kids have a mocktail (or two) in wine glasses (which they have always LOVED…there’s something fun to a kid about drinking sparkling juice out of a real wine glass!).

We eat a good meal. Have an extraordinary dessert. And then, switch into pjs and watch a movie or New Year’s Eve special on the couch. And now, my kids are all at an age where they can stay up at watch the ball drop at midnight!

Sometimes the best New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day activities for kids is to just keep them busy. It is a day off afterall! Break the routine and do something different as a family.

That may look like a family hike. Sledding. Making a snowman. Maybe you want to fancy things up and make a special meal.
