Yes, the Little Black Dress Must-Haves. There are the any-occasion, go-to, classic outfit idea which will take you from wedding to date night to semi-formal occasion. But a little black dress doesn’t have to be boring. The cut, style, accessories all make the LBD more than a wardrobe basic. Which is your favourite dress?…
Little Black Dress Must-Haves
Aside: I was inspired to write about the LBD because of my daughter’s grade 8 semi-formal. She’s 13 but is the size of a…well…me. So how do you appropriately attire a woman-size tween? I know a lot of her classmates are going all out with chiffon and colour.
However, I didn’t want to buy her a dress she would only wear once. And really, how many formal events do 13 year old girls go to these days? I guided her towards a little black dress. Something she would feel great in at semi…but also a dress she could wear when we go out to a restaurant.
She choose a dress with an awesome cut-out; making it a little more fun than a regular dress and funkier than a formal dress. Bonus: the girl is COMFORTABLE in the dress (and anyone who has a 13 year old daughter knows body image is really, really important).
What makes a LBD unique?
- Neckline (I love the scalloped neckline above)
- Fit (I don’t mind form fitted but I also like a little twirl factor for dancing)
- Fabric (I’m team machine-wash but that’s minimalist me).
- Shoes (LBD goes with flats just as well as heels)
- Accessories (a pop of colour can be awesome)

I had the same problem when our daughter was a tween. A LBD is perfect.

My daughter’s the same age & I agree with going for the little black dress. There are a ton of ways to accessorize & add colored pieces depending on the function. I would also try to find a fabric that travels well without wrinkling.

My daughter just turned 13 on Sunday but she looks 16. Everywhere we go I catch people and it makes me want to yell…creep she’s a kid.

Ye I do have a LBD. I may dress casually most of the time but I am ready if need be. All I have to do is change the look with shoes and accessories.
