DIY T-shirt key ring

January 18, 2017 6 Comments

This DIY T-shirt key ring is the perfect craft activity to encourage kids to recycle and upcycle (great as a boredom buster and also envrio-activity). To make a DIY T-shirt key ring you only need one thing (which you certainly have at home)…old t-shirts.

You will need:

  • old, clean, t-shirts (that’s all)

Think of t-shirts which have been outgrown. T-shirts with a hole or a rip. T-shirts that might have a stain that just won’t come out. Instead of throwing them in the garbage…use them as craft supplies! This is a great way to show kids to think outside the box when it comes to craft materials. It’s also something hands-on they can create (hello teachers! do you have makerspace? this is for you!).

To make a DIY t-shirt key ring follow the steps below

DIY t-shirt key ring, crafts for kids, crafts for teens

Cut three strips of t-shirt material. Your choice if you want all the same colours or to mix and match. Lay your t-shirt(s) on a flat surface. Then, using scissors cut horizontally through the bottom and top layers of t-shirt fabric.

First cut, cut off the hem (discard).

Then, cut your three strips of t-shirt material. Your choice how wide you want the strips. I cut about a half inch – but you can cut bigger if you like. This is an activity where you really can’t make a bad choice. Try different widths and see which one you like best.

Put the three ends of your three strips of t-shirt fabric together and tie a knot in the top.

Now, braid the three pieces of t-shirt fabric tightly.

TIP: Put the top end of your t-shirt strips in your mouth and braid with your two hands. This way you have both hands available to tightly braid. No worries, if this isn’t your choice. You can tape the top end of your t-shirt strips with masking tape onto a table and have it stay put that way as an alternative.

Once you have finished braiding the t-shirt strips – tie a knot at the bottom.

Use scissors to cut off any extra fabric off the top and bottom of the knots.

Put your key ring through the braid. And double knot the two ends together.

DONE!

And if you happen to like to DIY and upcycle…I recommend my NO SEW DIY T-SHIRT INFINITY SCARF project…
