Top 5 Mistakes We Make When Grocery Shopping

May 13, 2016

Of the Top 5 Mistakes We Make When Grocery Shopping…I made every-single-mistake on my last grocery trip. Aside: I could have titled this “Top 5 Reasons I should not take my kids to grocery shopping“. Learn from my mistakes and do not do any of these Top 5 Mistakes We Make When Grocery Shopping (especially #3 and #5)…

Disclosure: I am a P&Gmom ambassador. As part of my affiliation with this group I have been compensated to test the Loblaws Click & Collect service. The opinions on this blog are my own.

Top 5 Mistakes We Make When Grocery Shopping

Top 5 Mistakes We Make When Grocery Shopping

  1. Impulse buying. Guilty. My last shopping trip took over an hour (though I promised the kids we’d be in and out). Because they were tired (and so was I) – I shopped spur-of-the-moment. You know what that’s like right? Walk by the brownies…buy the brownies. Walk by the cookies…buy two boxes of cookies. Never a healthy shopping experience.
  2. Shopping on the wrong day. Did it. Weekends are always busier. And my Loblaws PC Plus points load up on Friday mornings…so really, I should do my shopping Fridays because I can take advantage of the PC Plus points plus the new flyer starts.Shopping Cart, groceries, grocery store, shopping
  3. Shopping on an empty stomach. Don’t do it! My kids were hangry (hangry = hungry + angry) which resulted in a fairly impressive lying-on-the-floor meltdown of my son. I shopped too long, on the wrong day, and hungry…it was a trifecta of what not to do when you grocery shop.
  4. The wrong check-out line. Weekends are always busy. And the line-ups loonnng. Choosing the right check out line is like a path to freedom.
  5. Not having a meal plan. It’ll come back to bite you in the butt. I shopped for school lunch essentials…but ended up having nothing for dinner. Having a meal plan keeps you to healthy choices and organizes you life. Loblaws click and collect

Bonus #6: Not stocking up on your tried and true products. I’m talking Pampers, Secret, Crest, Dawn, and Mr. Clean – your favourite products that don’t go out of date and you always need on hand. Psst…click here to take advantage of coupons and sample offers.

I am putting a stop to the Top 5 Mistakes We Make When Grocery Shopping madness now. I have been challenged to track how much time I save by using Click & Collect to purchase my everyday necessities (like Bounty which I use all the time). I find that if I eat before shopping nothing looks good to me to buy LOL…it doesnt have any appeal to me ..but when I’m hungry I think of ten ways to make that ground beef into meals. I now only go on fridays mornings before work (7am the store opens) because I have gone into the city on a saturday only to find nothing on the shelves and then have to wait an additional 2weeks before I can go again. I am sure I impulse buy…oh look brownies…I’ll make those tomorrow..yep, 2 weeks later still havent had the time to make brownies lol

It seems I do ALL those things every time I shop. Maybe I just hate shopping. It just never seems to go well. and I always forget things, list or no list.

I am guilty of shopping on an emppty stomach – which does lead to impulse buying! It’s something simple to not do – but I do it often

The “right” check out for me is online. No line ups ever! In store – peak at the carts in front of you…are they FULL or semi-full? Line up behind the semi-full whenever possible to get through faster.

I tend to shop Fridays too – load up for the weekend and take advantage of the new flyer deals.

I try to shop first thing in the morning (after breakfast) so my tummy won’t make my brain make impulse choices.

The list is my saving grace. I know I’ll buy off list (always happens) but I list not the wants but the absolute needs

We’re all guilty of it – you aren’t alone 🙂

I shop on an empty stomach all the time. I need to knock that off because I always end up spending double.

I’m an impulse shopper and always shop when I’m hungry which is so awful and always leads to over spending and buying stuff I don’t need!

I need a meal plan before I go to the store, but early do! I hate cooking so I hate looking! This is a good reminder that it saves me money though so I need to do it LOL.

Okay, I can say that I have made every single one of these mistakes. I am horrible at meal planning until I am mid-aisle then I have all these ideas and then I never know what I have in the pantry and end up repurchasing items. LOL

I am terrible for impulse buying at the grocery store. I have learned my lesson never to shop while i am hungry.

I have to make a list and stick to it when i go grocery shopping. If i do not make a list i always forget what i needed.

These are all great examples of grocery shopping mistakes. I do my best to make an in-depth list based on the weekly ad and sales, but yummy snacks sometimes get me sidetracked.

These are for real! Making a list before you go on a grocery is a big help and learn how to focus on what is just written. Most especially, the MEAL PLAN for a week is helpful in saving time and money.

I do all of these bad habits, I don’t think it will ever be a perfect shopping trip, that’s just nature, but I do try to eat before I go or else I will buy more junk than healthy!!

My husband and I have a running joke about picking the right lane…No matter what I do I seem to pick the wrong one where the machine’s don’t work when people go to pay, price checks are needed so my husband always says whichever one I pick we should go in a different one!

I still do this, shopping on an empty stomach. I course I buy way too much junk then

  27. Elizabeth Matthiesen says

Only buying for myself and on my own means that I don’t get sidetracked. I’ll have a list of the essentials that I need but will also check out what’s on sale and buy that if it fits into my plans. Shopping with children in tow is never easy, as I well remember.

And update that list as things run out…my girls go through more Herbal Essence than I can keep on hand.

And the end of the aisle promotions…gets me every time. Which is why Click & Collect keeps me from overspending (most of the time)
