Indoor Birthday Party Ideas are always handy for a winter at home party (or rainy day party or its-just-too-hot-out party). I’ve put together an Indoor Birthday Party Ideas list of easy and economical activities to keep kids busy during an indoor birthday party…
Indoor Birthday Party Ideas
Face painting – always a hit. What I did was print off a selection of superhero logos (you could do princess logos, animals, shapes, flowers, rainbows & unicorns), put that into a page protector and had each child pick one design. A step up would be to cut out those logos and turn them into stencils (can be done but freehand is pretty easy too). I also kept the face painting to just one cheek (so that it would be easier for parents to clean off – entire face paint – can be messy. A face painting kit is under $13 at a party store and can be used for at least 10 kids. Be sure to clean brushes between kids 😉
Tattoos – while the other kids wait for face painting I set up a tattoo station where kids could choose tattoos. Simple and straightforward.
Balloons – insanely simple. Blow them up, knot them, and let the kids have at it. I would say of all my indoor birthday party ideas this one was the kids’ favourite. 12 balloons in my living room and the kids were in heaven. Yes, balloons will pop.
Freeze dance – cost = free. Ipod, radio, heck even a Youtube playlist will do for freeze dance. I even let it be kid led – having the kids shout out which song next and we simply Youtube’d it.
A craft – think of your group. I initially thought of painting canvas’ with this group of 5 year old boys…I’ve done it in the past with my girls and the girls LOVED it. Kept them busy for minutes upon minutes. However, the energy and focus of 5 year old boys is different (add in the mess factor). I decided to “control” the craft to a certain degree. I put out 2 foam snowmen (set of 12 at dollar store) and washable markers. The boys were engaged in crafting and there was not one pot of paint spilled. Yes, they whipped through the craft activity pretty fast – but I find with boys – a lot of small activities is best to keep them focused anyway.

Scavenger hunt – great indoor birthday party activity for older kids. You can tweak my Outdoor Scavenger Hunt For Kids free printable to suit indoor needs.
Egg race – minute to win it! Get out those plastic Easter eggs and your big serving spoon and you have an egg race at no additional birthday cost. Divide the kids into teams. Put up some obstacles (like walk around a chair). Done.

Ours now only want to do sleepovers. Throw in a movie, lock the door and they’re good for the night!

These are great party ideas. An egg race is so much fun to watch the kids try to do. My kids always loved slumber parties.
