I do it about once a season; making me a bit of an expert to share Tips For Donating Your Things. From clothes to housewares to kid gear…if you aren’t using it…why not donate it so that someone else can enjoy your gently used things?! Free your closet and make someone else’s day!
Tips For Donating Your Things
Think about the top 10 things to donate: Clothing for men, women and children. Accessories (belts, purses and scarves). Kitchen items (small countertop appliances, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans). Shoes and boots. Linens (blankets, sheets and pillowcases). Outerwear for all ages. Household décor (figurines and other decorative objects). Kids games, puzzles and toys. Wall art, mirrors and picture frames. Towels.
And yes, I recommend always washing your donating items before putting them in the donation bag…common courtesy n’est pas?!
Go through your closets, toy bins, and basement once a season. Clothing is easy to sort…check the sizes and if it doesn’t fit…donate. Then, move on to toy bins…those in good condition baby toys (or toddler toys or whatever “stage” has just past)…ensure they are in good working order and put them in a donation bag. Next, move to the basement (or garage or shed) check your housewares storage and sort through what could be donated.
Get the kids involved. Last time we did a toy donation I was a little worried my young son would put up a fight. He surprised me. When I asked “keep or give away?” pointing to a toy I was holding he simply said “give away“. I will note: I kept the toy donation bag out of site at home for 48 hours to ensure there wouldn’t be any meltdowns about a missing toy. But nothing. He was happy to give away. 🙂
Join GLAD® in Donating 4 Good this summer!
This summer, GLAD® is teaming up with Goodwill in Toronto and the G.T.A. to help drive donations for their Donate4Good program.
To help encourage our communities to donate their used goods to those in need through Goodwill, GLAD® will be donating $10,000 + 10,000 black plastic bags to help corral your donation items.
HOW CAN I RECEIVE THE GLAD® BAGS AND DONATE?
GLAD will be stationed at 5 select Loblaws locations (see below) across Toronto on weekends from August through to October to pick up your donations. Select neighbourhoods will also have door-to-door bag deliveries to help you prepare before your local Loblaws drop-off date.
LOBLAWS YONGE ST. – 3501 Yonge St, North York Aug 14th/15th
LOBLAWS LESLIE ST. – 17 Leslie St, Toronto Aug 28th/29th
LOBLAWS MUSGRAVE ST. – 50 Musgrave St., Toronto Sept 18th/19
LOBLAWS DUNDAS ST. W. – 2280 Dundas St. West, Toronto Oct 2nd/3rd
LOBLAWS MCLAUGHLIN – 5970 McLaughlin Rd, Mississauga Oct 23rd/24th
The biggest thing when donating items is to make sure they are in good condition. Rips, stains, broken, scratched or tattered items are not items to donate. So many people give garbage away thinking they are doing a service.
I agree with loriag, if it’s not ok then don’t donate it what ever it is. GLAD is doing a fine job donating black plastic bags and money to a good cause 🙂
These are FANTASTIC tips! And I certainly needed them. I have so much stuff in my house right now!
I really love that Loblaws is helping people to donate their things. Now folks can make space and maybe help some other people.
We actually just donated a lot of stuff last month! It is a great way to help others and de-clutter!
We are always purging clothing and items for the needy. I think it is so important that everyone tries to give back.
We donate all the time. I love passing our stuff on to new homes.
I like the idea of holding onto toys for a little extra time, in case a child changes their mind. It’s great that your son is already so giving!
We try to donate at least once a year with big stuff and a lot during the year. We try to make sure that the quality is still there in anything we donate. My son is still learning the giving part! 🙂
Great tips! I’m actually planning on donating a bunch of items soon. I just went through all of my stuff and planning to go through some more. I love the feeling of being able to donate and get that stuff out of the house.
I need to get some Glad bags to fill with items to donate. We moved houses recently and it’s easy to find things that we should have donated! Better late than never!
I think it is very important to get your kids involved in donating. It gets them to make decisions and learn about charity.
We donate our extra things once a season. It is a great way to reduce clutter and help out. These are great tips.
I will have to watch for Glad in our area. I have a ton of clothes for donation.
Great ideas… Every couple of weeks I get the kids with their GLAD bags into the play room and they have to each choose three toys to give away. It helps keep down clutter and helps them appreciate what they have
These are great ideas! I need to go through my storage facility. I kept a lot of things I thought I would end up using but it never happened.
These are great tips! I wish Glad would come to TX! I have a few things I am wanting to donate.
