How do you encourage STEM Learning?

June 5, 2015 29 Comments

How do you encourage STEM Learning? STEM = Science, technology, engineering and math. I encourage STEM learning when we do baking activities (measuring and mixing is science and math; using technology with a little bit of engineering).

How do you encourage STEM learning

I LOVE learning activities (if you’ve read either of my books – you know this already).

Energizer® Canada and Walmart are celebrating and showcasing the importance of STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] to Canada’s next generation of thinkers and innovators over at see.walmart.ca/energizer/en.

How do you encourage STEM Learning?

For little kids: colouring pages where they can discover STEM learning.

For older kids: hands-on, age appropriate, experiments where they can discover STEM learning.

Together Walmart Canada, Energizer® Canada, and Actua have created a series of FREE download printables to help encourage STEM learning. I like that the printables are divided into subjects (science, technology, engineering and math).

In the image above – look at the activity sheet on the left – I have done that Tie Dye Milk experiment with my own kids and it is super fun (and fun while they are learning – pretty cool!). It uses ingredients you already have in the kitchen pantry (which you can also buy at Walmart Canada if you happen to be out). It takes seconds to make and you can do it over and over with different results. It’s a great activity!

  • Actua, a national Canadian charity, has shared with Energizer® some hands-on STEM activities that children can do with their parents free to parents at see.walmart.ca/energizer/en
  • Actua is a registered charity with a twenty-year track record of success in providing hands-on, interactive education enrichment experiences in science, engineering, technology, and mathematics (STEM) to Canadian youth aged 6 to 16 years.
  • You can visit the STEM activity hub at see.walmart.ca/energizer/en to download and print the worksheets to help encourage STEM learning with your children.
  • Energizer® is a large proponent of STEM  – using these skill resulted new Energizer® EcoAdvanced™ battery, the world’s first AA battery made with 4% recycled batteries.

My boys Love STEM related activities. I don’t even have to do much, they do it on their own.

We do fun apps on the iPad, and they have lots of building related toys for hands on stuff. Love to promote STEM to my son when I can!

It’s so important to get the kid involved in STEM. It’s the future, and they need to be a part of it!

Stem is so much fun. We do homeschooling so we do what we can and try to make things as hands on as possible. My kids love school and learning so much I really just have to mention to them and they are ready to go!

I homeschooled my kids for a while and there were some fun ways to get STEM into their curriculum. We went to a neat science museum for kids and they learned a lot! We had a membership so we went often.

My son was always big into science and discovery. Any tech related project where he could use creativity was great.

My kids are very into science and technology, yet occasionally see math as a challenge. I am all about encouraging more STEM related activities!

Stem learning is very imortant to focus on. It’s especially important in the summer when kids aren’t in school!

I do not have children, but I once taught Special Education and I always encouraged parents to find unique ways to keep kids engaged during the summer especially with STEM learning as those are the subjects many students often have difficulty with.

I am encouraging this summer by having our family do some volunteering. We are taking wetland water samples and learning all sort of fun stuff.. about the animals and plants in the water.

I’ve been making sure my kids have plenty of opportunities to explore & build their whole lives, and I’m hoping that fun translates into an increased interest in STEM learning.

I wish more people would focus on STEM learning, especially math. Way too many people can’t grasp numbers without a calculator anymore.

Pretty cool. I am all for printing and doing learning the old fashioned way, with paper and pencil. With apps there are many kids who just memorize so when it comes time to show their work in class, they can’t do it.

My husband is a science, technology, engineering, and math wiz, so STEM learning has been a huge part of my son’s education/life. My son is good in math, but it isn’t his favorite subject, so my husband really tries to make math fun/exciting for him.

I think in schools there are all these teacher expectations, tests, and report cards that might discourage kids from STEM and develop the “I CAN’T do it” mentality, so it is really important they get to free style STEM activities at home where there is no grading, no judgement, and just play and discover.
