5 Ways To Fill Your Home With Fall Scents

November 26, 2014 23 Comments

Cinnamon, lavender, and orange – to me these are the scents of Fall. As the days grow shorter (and colder), I love to fill my home with fall scents (especially before I host guests). Here are my top 5 Ways To Fill Your Home With Fall Scents (easy and comforting!)…

5 Ways To Fill Your Home With Fall Scents

5 Ways To Fill Your Home With Fall Scents

Fresh Flowers. Someone recently sent me fresh flowers to celebrate my next book and they filled my home with the nicest floral scent. Roses, carnations, daisies, baby’s breath…a simple yet lovely arrangement of cut fresh flowers. It was a light, fresh, smell that simply made me happy. And who doesn’t want a happy home?

Greenery. Wreaths, garlands, fresh cuttings (think: pine, fir, cedar) – these smells all remind me of holiday time.  Greenery can easily be bought at flower shops, hardware stores and even grocery stores. Remember that greenery does dry out so do not place them near working chimneys or burning candles because they could be a fire hazard.

GLAD Odour Guard® Bags with febreze™ Freshness. The bags are available in a variety of sizes and two scents –fresh clean and lavender – all bags are equipped with an Easy-Tie closure, so when your bag is full, you just tie, grab, toss and you’re done. Great for parties because you want your house smelling fresh and clean…not like trash.

Simmering Potpouri. Simmering potpouri is one of my favourite ways to fill my home with fall scents. You might remember my DIY Orange and Cloves Air Freshner post a while back.  Natural, easy, and economical simmering some of the spices your already have in your kitchen pantry with water is a good way to get your home smelling awesome fast. Try simmering: cinnamon, cranberries, cloves, orange peels, or star of anise.

Scented candles. Need a perfect afternoon? Light a scented candle (I like apple spice scents), cuddle up on the couch with your kids and snuggle under a blanket while watching a family movie.  Your home will be filled with great smells and greater family memories. Just keep the candles out of reach of small children (I put mine on the fireplace mantel).

Other ways to eliminate odour and keep your home smelling fresh: sprinkle baking soda in gym bags, put dirty diapers in GLAD Easy-Tie Small Kitchen Compostable Bags, air out wet boots, open a window on a warm day to freshen the air.

What are your tips for making your house smell nice?…

Scented candles and wax cubes are my go-to house scent fillers. I use candles in my bathroom (small ones) but wax cubes in the larger areas.
