5 Must Read Books By Canadian Authors

January 25, 2014

I find reading to be a great way to re-charge…and find inspiration. These are my top picks for 5 Must Read Books By Canadian Authors. And keep reading because I’m sharing a very personal…and completely embarrassing story…about The Time I Almost Looked Margaret Atwood In The Eyes)…

5 Must Read Books By Canadian Authors

5 Must Read Books By Canadian Authors

  • A Beautiful Heist by Kim Foster
  • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
  • I Am So The Boss Of You by Kathy Buckworth
  • Grazing by Julie Van Rosendaal
  • The 100-Mile Diet: a year of local eating by Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon

Why I love these books: A Beautiful Heist gives you the perfect reality time-out. The Handmaid’s Tale is simply gripping.  I Am So The Boss Of You speaks to every parent. Grazing is a book I would love to have on hand for my next dinner party. The 100-Mile Diet will make you want to eat local.

The time I almost looked Margaret Atwood in the eyes

It was McMaster University commencement…Margaret Atwood was the key note speaker…I was a shy graduate. I so desperately wanted to be a writer…and I so looked up to Ms. Atwood. Imagine the butterflies in my stomach. As I lined up to walk across the stage…receiving my degree…walking past this icon of Canadian literature. I knew this would be Our Moment…the moment between Ms. Atwood and myself…we would lock eyes…she would smile at me…and this one moment would forever change my life…I would be so inspired by this moment I would  immediately go about making  life-long-dream-of-becoming-a-published-author a reality. It. Was. Meant. To. Be. Degree in hand, I walked in my black robe, steadying myself for this monumental-moment-of-life (the smile from Ms. Atwood…not getting my degree…I had priorities).

Just as I was about to walk past…she looked down at her graduation program…and kept looking down…the entire duration of my walk past her. Moment. Gone. Forever. Gah.

Ms. Atwood still inspires me…to read..to write…to support Canadian authors. Support a Canadian author yourself by picking up one of my suggested books. Or if you love reading with your kids – try one of my pics for Canadian Books For Kids.  That is a list of my 10 fav. kids books by Canadian authors. Reading is a great activity…for yourself…for your family!

Maybe someday you’ll get your moment elsewhere, when you least expect it. Out of your list, I’d like to read A Beautiful Heist.

Wasn’t The Handmaid’s Tale the perfect marriage of fantasy and possible-future-reality…

The 100 Mile Diet is a great read. I interviewed the authors years ago for a magazine article (Canadian Girl magazine I believe).
