Homemade Tomato Sauce

May 23, 2013 11 Comments

Pasta and homemade tomato sauce is a weekly staple in our house. It’s easy, healthy, and fast (for those night’s when it’s feels like Dinner Impossible). All of my kids (sans the toddler – he is so picky!) love this main meal (and it’s so good I often double cook and make enough to go in the thermos for school lunch the next day). Between you and I…here is my recipe for Homemade Tomato Sauce…

Homemade Tomato Sauce

You will need:

  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • water
  • garlic powder
  • basil
  • salt
  • sugar

Directions:

  1. Pour crushed tomatoes into pot (stove top – bring to a boil and then reduce and simmer for 30 minutes. Crockpot – cook on low 1 hr).
  2. Add 1 tsp sugar (it cuts the acidity in the tomatoes)
  3. Add a good dash of garlic powder
  4. Add a double dash of basil
  5. Take crushed tomato can and add 1/4 full of water. Pour into pot.
  6. Add a dash of salt.
  7. Mix.
  8. Simmer and done.

Easy right? I put this one while I start supervising homework and that way – dinner is cooking while I hang with the kids. Boil some water for the pasta and you have a full meal. It’s also a good vegetarian option.

Pasta (and the ingredients for this Homemade Tomato Sauce) is something we always have in the house.

This is our comfort food…what’s yours?

We basically do this whenever we make pasta! Crushed tomatoes or even diced tomatoes work really well! Thanks for the recipe!

How awesome. My kiddos don’t like the diced so we stick to crushed. Maybe one day their taste will change…
