I had a friend over for tea the other evening and I was complaining about the mass amounts of fruit flies I have been noticing this year…last year did not seem so bad!
I know you can get fruit fly traps from Lee Valley tools, and that store if really just around the corner from me – but somehow still to hard to get to…
My friend mentioned her husband had made a fruit fly trap by putting a small amount of red wine in a glass, covering the top of the glass with plastic cling wrap and poking some holes in the plastic wrap…I was getting so grossed out by the fruit flies in my kitchen I decided to try it…one small problem was I don’t drink wine and know nothing about it, hubby has become something of a wine junky lately and I really did not want to open the wrong bottle (apparently we have some that should not be opened for a few years, and we also have some that are quite pricey…) soooooo not wanting to open the wrong bottle and not knowing if the trap would only work without alcohol in it I compromised and poured some sherry and some tropical fruit juice into a glass…covered it with the wrap, poked the holes with scissors and left it alone…and it works!!
Yay – fruit flies are finding their way into the holes but not out and then somehow they all seem to drown…I would certainly recommend this as a quick, easy, cheap way to deal with fruit flies…just thought some of your busy readers might like to know!!
