Reading is one of my favourite things to do with my kids…and with Family Literacy Day upon us…I wanted to share some of my favourite Canadian Books For Kids…
Canadian Books For Kids
- Scaredy Squirrel by Melanie Watt
- La Princesse Dans un Sac by Robert N. Munsch, Michael Martchenko and Christiane Duchesne
- Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang byMordecai Richler
- Like a Pro by Helaine Becker
- Boredom Busters by Caroline Fernandez (ME!)
- Hiding Edith By Kathy Kacer
- Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montegomery
- Real Mermaids Don’t Wear Toerings by Hélène Boudreau
- Bitten by Kelly Armstrong
- Breakaway by Michael Betcherman
I’ve grouped the books into early reader, non fiction and teen fiction to make life easier in figuring out which favourites might be age appropriate for your kids.
Why I love these books: Melanie Watt is excellent at engaging young readers. La Princesse Dans un Sac (The Paper Bag Princess) allows young readers to discover adventure, challenges, courage, and making up your own mind. Jacob Two-Two is pure entertainment. Like a Pro speaks to the curiosity in every-child. Boredom Busters…well, I think it’s the perfect balance of entertainment and education…but I’m shamelessly bias 😉 My daughter discovered her love of history via Finding Edith. Anne is simply classic Canadiana. Real Mermaids connects with pre-tween emotions. Bitten is my daughter’s current favourite book. Breakaway is the boy teen book I want my son to read.
Reading isn’t just for kids…stay tuned for my pics for 5 Must Read Books By Canadian Authors – for grown-ups!…
Great list of books. I am so thankful my kids love reading as much as we do.
I think a love of reading is taught…and grown. I bet your kids love reading because you read to them as little ones.
great choices. I always enjoyed reading to my children and now it’s my grandchildren I read to. I’m an avid reader but not all my children (7) developed a love for reading.
Isn’t that funny that not all kids develop a love for reading?! I suppose it’s a hobby they can always take up as they grow older…
Thanks for this lovely list of Canadian books! I’ll be checking some out for my grandkids!
Great to check out at the library, get as an e-reader book, or the tried-and-true print copy.
Great choices! We definitely have a few of these at home!
I actually have 3 copies of Love You Forever by Robert Munsch…that is a great read too (have tissue ready).
Great List of Books. I loved Anne of Green Gables when I was younger! I always include a book when I give a gift to a child, love to encourage reading!
I love giving books for kid’s birthday presents (and shower gifts). It’s a great way to help them build their own library 😉
anne of green gables is my all time fav. book!
Lots of great books
Robert Munsch is my absolute favorite since I was a little gal.Great having him as a neighbor! Every Halloween the children head to his home to receive a pint size book for a treat. The sounds of the kids voices, their smiles and laughter, such a joy to watch the excitement.
My son LOVES the Scaredy Squirrel series of books!
