Scotch Scones Recipe

August 5, 2019

This is my grandmother’s Scotch Scones Recipe. Nope, we don’t come from a Scottish herritage. And I have no idea what makes these scones particularly “Scottish”. But I do know — they are always a hit for breakfast. Seriously, you’ll have a hard time keeping these as they get eaten so quickly…

Scotch Scones Recipe

Scotch Scone Recipe

  • 3 cups of all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 5 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg beaten and add to that milk to make 1 cup
  • 3/4 cup of butter (I used one butter stick)
  • Optional: raisins and/or cinnamon (I used cinnamon*)
Directions:

Preheat oven to 350.

In a bowl add ingredients and mix.

On a cookie sheet – place a non-stick rubber mat (or parchment paper will do). Using a tablespoon drop the batter on to the non-stick mat.

Bake 15 to 20 minutes.

*No, I don’t know if cinnamon is a particularly “Scottish” ingredient but this is the way my Grandma always made them and thus part of our family recipe.

High Tea

These scones go really well for breakfast. Or afternoon tea. OR make your own high tea experience (with fancy cups and plates).

Being British I grew up with High Teas but they were always something special. The best are down in Cornwall and Devon where they have fresh clotted cream to put on the scones and home-made strawberry jam – heaven! I have never heard of cinnamon put in scones but there are often raisins or sultanas in them.

Your readers are confusing afternoon tea and “high tea”. They are quite different.
High tea is what North Americans would call a workman’s light supper: fish and chips, egg and chips etc.

I have tried scones and am a huge fan. They are especially great with afternoon tea. However, I have never had the cinnamon ones. They look and sound delicious! I will certainly be trying this recipe. Thank you for sharing.
