Keep Playing #LikeAGirl

July 18, 2016 20 Comments

We encourage our girls’ to Keep Playing #LikeAGirl (and have ever since they were young). My girls practice, participate, and teach karate #LikeAGirl. What they bring to karate — and what karate brings to them — are some of the most important life skills they will develop — commitment, endurance, focus, and confidence. Do you encourage your daughters to Keep Playing #LikeAGirl?…

Keep Playing #LikeAGirl

For more than 30 years, Always has been championing girls’ confidence globally and has changed the simple phrase of #LikeAGirl to mean powerful and amazing things!

With half of girls quitting sports by the end of puberty, and more than two-thirds feeling that they don’t belong or that society doesn’t encourage them to play, the reality is that this directly affects girls’ development and future success by making it difficult for them to understand teamwork, build leadership skills and most importantly, have confidence in themselves. Both of my girls hit a “I don’t want to do karate anymore” stage when they hit their tweens. It wasn’t that they fell out of love with Karate…it was that they felt uncomfortable partnering up with the guys.

But, as with most sports, the most important thing about Karate isn’t gender. It’s about personal best. It’s about technique. It’s about ever growing into the life-long fit person inside of you.

Keep Playing #LikeAGirl

I rallied my daughters to keep playing #LikeAGirl.karate-kick

How you can encourage your girls to keep playing…

  • Talk about what they love best about their sport (the team? the drills? the challenge?)
  • Discuss their sport goals (black belt? hockey league? triathlon medal?)
  • Who do they look up to in their sports? (we took our girls to the Pan Am Games Karate finale specifically so they could see the women’s gold medal match).  It’s important for girls to have strong female role models in sports (for example: female soccer players can look up to Team Canada goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé).
  • Support your girls in sports (drive them, register them, rally them)
  • Inspire young girls everywhere by posting a picture or a tweet on social media using the #LikeAGirl hashtag. Show your support – just click this link to tweet:Help inspire girls’ confidence by encouraging them to Keep Playing #LikeAGirl via @ParentClub
  • Make their sport part of your family routine (every weekend – we go to Karate classes – rain or shine)

This post is brought to you be Always. And yes, my daughters practice Karate #LikeAGirl. Opinions, as always, are my own.

Such great ways to help encourage your girls to keep playing! So much girls can learn from doing something that they love despite what others may think.

Agree – girls can learn so much in sport…teamwork, confidence, problem solving, physical fitness, commitment…

I like that brands, like Always, take an interest in our girls and their confidence. It’s important to me as a Mom to know the brands I trust want to rally the next generation in positive ways.

I think this is so great. It’s important that everyone is able to choose a sport they love. I have two daughters, and one of them wants to join soccer. I think I’m going to sign her up this fall too.

Sign her up! I think if a girl shows interest in a sport…you gotta support her on it.

I love, love, love this ad. I remember my Mama telling me that I had to swim because the other sports were not for girls. LOL… This is awesome

It’s great that you encourage your daughters to continue with their sports. My daughter used to take karate as well but then she didn’t want to do it anymore. I never encouraged her to stay with it. It’s great that Always is promoting this.

I never realized how many girls quit sports. That’s horrible. I have boys but I hope that if I do have a daughter she will feel like she can do whatever she wants #likeagirl

Girls need these messages to know they are just as good at sports as the boys. I’ll share a tweet!

It is so important for girls to know they can choose any sport they want to play in. Your gender does not define what you can do.

I completely agree! These kinds of videos are amazing, and girls should be proud to be girls, and pursue whatever they want.

I would love for my girls to get involved with karate. I think a sport would help them to learn discipline and commitment.

Totally with you! These videos should be promoted even more, to motivate those girls not involved in activities. It will help them n the long run.

I’d love to see some photos of your daughters practicing karate- have you blogged about it before? I love the message that it’s how you do it, not who you are doing it that defines the sport!
