Huggies No Baby Unhugged Program

May 9, 2016 18 Comments

Have you heard about the Huggies No Baby Unhugged Program? I’ll explain it in a sec…but let’s rewind back to the hour after my son was born. “Take off your shirt” said the midwife.

“Pardon me?” asked my husband (we were close to the midwives and all…but  asking to undress seemed a little forward).

“Take off your shirt. Skin to skin.” she replied with a smile.

The baby had been lying on my skin for the first hour of his life (quiet honestly, I was too tired to move him). When it was time for his Dad to hold him – the midwives guided him hug our newborn through skin to skin contact (also know as Kangaroo Care). That moment a bond was born.

Huggies No Baby Unhugged Program

About the Huggies No Baby Unhugged Program…

The Huggies No Baby Unhugged Program is a partnership between Huggies and the Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres; funding and facilitating hospital hugging programs in Canada. These programs include hugging chairs and stations, along with Hugger volunteers in neonatal intensive care units; helping to ensure all babies get the hugs they need. Huggies brand believes in the power of hugs, after all, there’s a soft, comforting hug in every diaper Huggies makes!

Huggies No Baby Unhugged

Kangaroo Care and Why Hugging a Newborn Matters…

Kangaroo Care is skin to skin contact where the baby wears only a diaper and is gently hugged against your bare chest. The benefits of skin to skin hugging include: more stable heart rate, improved oxygen levels, more stable body temperature, improved pain tolerance, improved sleep, faster weight gain, healthier brain development.

Kangaroo care help me, as a Mom, with my newborns. I felt connected and bonded with them. I felt it gave them a sense of safety. It helped me learn to distinguish their cries – if I picked them up and they stopped crying in my arms – they needed comfort Vs if I picked them up and they kept crying they needed to be fed (or it was gas).

I always felt funny about the skin to skin thing because I have all boys. I know they were babies, but it still didn’t feel right to me.

I have heard of this before and I think it is absolutely a wonderful idea. Kids in the hospital can always use cuddles all day long. I think it’s been proven over and over again that the warmth of a touch can heal a baby.

Having that skin to skin contact is so important! Keeping contact with your little one after that is just as important. You have to love hugs with babies and children!

My obgyn suggested I do this with all of my kids. It is so important for newborns to get the skin to skin contact.

This sounds like a wonderful program. I remember when I use to hold my girls close when they were babies. That’s always a great feeling.

I remember doing the skin to skin thing with all three of my babies. Now, they wont even bathe the baby the first day so it can bond and regulate temps.

Skin to skin contact is so important. So glad to know Huggies is promoting this no baby unhugged program to build awareness among parents who might not already know about the great benefits of doing this with infants.
