Ontario Pork Social Responsibility

April 27, 2016 30 Comments

As a farm to fork supporter I was pleased to read the Ontario Pork Social Responsibility report recently. Why – you ask? Because I like to think beyond my big box grocery store and consider the bigger picture of where our food comes from…and how that food production impacts others.ontario pork social responsibility

Ontario Pork Social Responsibility

Ontario Pork launched its inaugural Social Responsibility Report, becoming the first livestock commodity group in the province to commit to setting benchmarks in areas that measure economic, environmental, social and governance performance, based on global measurement standards.

As a major contributor to the province’s economic growth, Ontario Pork is engaging the entire sector in its social responsibility journey through a set of commitments to be achieved over the next three years, focused on six dimensions:

  •          Farm Management
  •          Economic Performance
  •          Environmental Stewardship
  •          Animal Care and Food Safety
  •          Relationships with the Community
  •          Workers’ Well-Being

To view the full Social Responsibility Report and access details about the data and methodology, visit www.ontariopork.on.ca/Social-Responsibilityontario pork

Why is the Ontario Pork Social Responsibility Report important to you and I? Because an industry is nothing without it’s social responsibility. Beyond knowing the price tag of food at your local grocery store — you should to think about the other price tags associated with the food you eat.

Do the farm workers have a safe working environment? Does the farm (and industry) have a high standard of animal care? What is the environmental impact to water and soil of a farm? Does a farm participate in best practices for farm management?

If farm workers were using broken equipment which could endanger them or if the farmer was being cruel to animals or if the water near that farm was undrinkable because of farm management problems…well, that not only affects the farmer…and the industry…but it affects it’s community and it’s customers.

This post is brought to you by Ontario Pork.

I love that pork farmers are taken care of by the government. I wish it was more strict here in the US.

Ontario Pork has an impressive set of social responsibilities they are acting on. I think that is really great! I wish many more companies would follow their lead. It’s something I’ll admit I don’t think about when I’m buying my groceries but I bet I will now!

This is an interesting post. A lot of great info that I really didn’t know about. I think it’s great to know where all your food comes. I know that’s not something we always know either.

Interesting, now only if other agriculture and animal industries could follow in Ontario Pork’s footsteps! This definitely makes me think about my meat sources and their social responsibility!

Adore the fact that they’re being so transparent about worker’s rights and working environments, where our food is coming from, etc. There’s a whole line of people and animals that get affected by food production and it’s nice to read positive information such as this!

After all the negative documentaries and reports that have come out in regards to the meat industries, it is refreshing to see a group step up and share information responsibly like this.
