Hand Me Down Tips For Kids Clothes

April 18, 2016 30 Comments

These Hand Me Down Tips For Kids Clothes will come in handy…every season! Yes, I am a big supporter of hand me downs (why not? save $ and not having to lug all the kids to the store for clothes shopping = win in my book). Do any of these hand me down tips for kids clothes work for you?…

Hand Me Down Tips For Kids Clothes

Hand Me Down Tips

Change of season means I quickly realize how much my children have grown! Instead of purchasing all new clothes for them, hand-me-downs are a great cost-effective way to easily turn-over your little one’s wardrobes.

Always hand down clothes which are in good shape (rips, tears, stains…upcycle them into a craft project or use them as dust rags). Kids deserve to wear clothes they would be proud of right?! If you can help it…don’t make them wear the stains of other kids on their clothes. Here are some simple and affordable ways to keep your kid’s clothes in great condition, and hand-me-down ready:
1. Host a clothing swap. I do this myself. Gather all your friends and have a clothes swap. Everybody can bring their kid’s old clothes that they have ourgrown. It gives you and your friends the chance to catch-up and socialize while refreshing your kids wardrobe and saving money. Bonus: gather your friends who wear the same size as you do for a clothes swap of your own!

2. Keep it in the family. At the end of every season, have your children pack away any clothes that are getting too small for them. Label the box with the date and season so in a few years, when your next child is ready for a new outfit, you know exactly where to find them. Make sure to wash everything before you store it away, so that it is clean and fresh when you pull it out of storage. Pro Tip: OxiCleanTM Foam Pre-treat rids your children’s clothes of tough dried on stains – even grease!Displaying Spring Fashion .JPGDisplaying Spring Fashion .JPGDisplaying Spring Fashion .JPGDisplaying Spring Fashion .JPG

3. Embrace the bold colours. Fun, bright and colourful spring clothes can lose their vibrancy quickly during the year – making it hard to pass them on. The right laundry detergent can go a long way in caring for clothes. Pro Tip: Upgrade from ordinary detergents and give your kids clothes a high definition clean with OxiCleanTM HDTM Laundry Detergent (available in liquid and paks). It will ensure your whites stay radiant and your colours vibrant.

Handmedowns weren’t an option for me when my kids were little. Mine are 7 years apart! My oldest is a girl and my youngest are 15 months apart.Thrift stores were a lifesaver for me.

As kids we always had handmedowns. Kids grow so fast especially my son! I think they are a great way to recycle good clothes and get the maximum use out of them.

We love hand me downs. My girls do it and my boys as well for the last 13 years. It’s been great and saves so much. I also pass on clothes my kids outgrow to other families!

Growing up I always got hand me downs from my older sister. Now I pass my oldest daughters clothes to my youngest daughter! These kids grow up too fast!

#2 is a smart idea that includes the kids. We are always running around wondering “Do we have size 10 shorts from Jason for Spencer?”

I went to a clothing swap years ago and it was a wonderful experience. I got some great clothes for the kids and it was a great way to get rid of the clothes they had grown out of

Great tips! I think hand me downs can be a good thing though. My daughters are the same size, and they often share their shirts and pants. They really don’t mind at all.

With four kids I have done a lot of clothes saving! I keep totes sorted by sizes and season so it’s easy to get what I need and nothing gets forgotten about.

My kids are only a few years apart so we used a lot of hand me downs and still do. I would suggest always being a size bulkier, cause then they could be used for 2 kids and will more than likely cost less if you buy them off season.

My kids are all close together but I love to use my son’s hand me down for my daughter. I always use his plaid button up shirts under her girly sweaters. So cute and saves me money!

I have a friend who has a girl and a boy. She only buys clothes in red, blue, black, and white. So that they can be handed down but are still neutral gender.

As a child, I hated hand me downs. As a mother, I love them! Haha. A great detergent can definitely keep them looking better longer.

We have a few friends with kids the same age as ours. We like to trade hand me downs for the kids. Second hand stores are a great place to find quality used kids clothes.

Agree – some things are worth paying more for (shoes, winter jackets).

There is a great Moms group near me that trades kids clothes. It is a great way to meet other Moms and trade for some clothes that will fit the kids.

I don’t receive any hand-me-downs for my own kids as they are the oldest out of all my friends. For my own family I do shop consignment every few months & I give a ton of my children’s clothes to my friends kids.
