Halloween Costume and Halloween Decor Ideas

October 1, 2015 25 Comments

Halloween Costume and Halloween Decor Ideas can be fun, frugal, and really pretty easy when you just add a bit of creativity to your thinking. I started with a general plan and then from that sprang spooktacular inspiration! It’s easy to get everything you need for a perfect Halloween…

Halloween Costume and Halloween Decor Ideas

I started with a visit to my local Value Village thrift store. Seriously, a great one-stop-Halloween shop. They had plenty of new Halloween costumes and accessories to buy as well as lots of items with make-your-own-Halloween-costume potential. I went in thinking “Minion Halloween Costume” because it’s a hot Halloween idea this year.  Plus, every time my son sees a yellow fire hydrant he says: “Tu le bella comme le papaya” so I knew he’d appreciate a Minion in the house.

Little did I know, I would come up with THREE Halloween costume possibilities from this one idea!

Halloween Haul 3 creative Halloween costumes

The Value Village Halloween expert (super friendly and aptly dressed up in costume) directed me to a new overalls costume. Gender-neutral and available in adult and kid sizes, I knew this was my must-have item at $19.99. From there I searched out a yellow t-shirt from the men’s section ($2.99). Instant Minion costume! I paired it with a Minion hat but you could make your own with a generic yellow hat and construction paper to make the Minion eyes and glasses.

That’s when it occurred to me. I could use these overalls for three creative Halloween costumes using things I already had around the house. Minion costume, cowboy/cowgirl costume, and construction worker costume! Easy and inexpensive Halloween costumes that we can use in future. (I love when our Halloween costumes can find another life.)

Halloween Decor Ideas

I searched the Value Village housewear area looking for something to paint (I know acrylic black paint goes on most things and would create an instant Halloween effect). I was looking for figurines (to transform into black statues), ceramic houses (to DIY into a Halloween village), or a glass bowl (to revamp into a Halloween candy bowl). That’s when my friend stumbled upon a metal serving tray ($3.99) and black-stemmed martini glasses ($2.99 for 4).

I think it turned out frighteningly well don’t you?!…

  1. Start by laying down newspaper
  2. Hand wash serving tray and glasses. Allow to air dry.
  3. Pour black acrylic paint into a paint tray (I used a paper plate).
  4. Lay serving tray on newspaper.
  5. Paint one side. Allow to dry. (I did 3 coats of black acrylic paint).
  6. Turn serving tray over and paint other side (3 coats again). Allow to dry.
  7. Voila – Bloody Halloween Cocktails at your ready (actually cranberry juice, thus a very family-friendly Halloween cocktail idea).

Halloween Cocktails, Halloween Decor

I can also use the serving tray as a candy bowl. And then, reuse it well after Halloween as a simple home decor item (but not for serving food – I wouldn’t want to eat off of acrylic paint).

And can I share…getting my craft on was good for the soul! Though not super artsy – the serving tray was just enough DIY to make me feel like I put a unique touch on our Halloween decor.

Value Village is the ultimate Halloween destination for creating unique, fun, fashionable or frightening costumes for the whole family and for every budget. See more here.
