Fever In Children is a pretty common experience. As a Mom to three school-aged kids, we have had our share of kid sick days. Though I’m not a doctor, I am very seasoned at assessing symptoms and treating non-urgent sickness…
Assessing a fever in children…
My kids always get “a face” when they get a fever. I can tell by skin colour and eyes if they are feeling well or unwell. Once I spy “the face” I instantly put my hand to their forehead (which is exactly what my Mom did for me when I was sick and it’s an instinct movement). I know the hand-to-forehead assessment is not a true indicator of a fever in children (my hands are always cold so me touching anyone – means I’m touching someone warmer than my own skin anyway). Thus, I know to use a thermometer for a true fever reading.
I’m including that Fahrenheit Celsius conversion table chart above, in this post, for reference. Why? My husband grew up in Europe where Celsius is the norm and I grew up in North America where we continue to use the Fahrenheit scale. And me telling him one of our kids has a fever of 101F always requires a conversion.
When my kids are sick, my top priorities are getting them healthy and providing comfort . The Braun No touch + forehead thermometer not only allows me to keep a close eye on their fever through its accurate colour coded reading but it also provides a “no touch” option that is perfect for sleeping children. In addition to having a thermometer at home, I always pack a thermometer with us when we travel. Why?
Because once, when we were at the cottage, my son came down with a fever. And we had no thermometer. 24 hours of a fever medication seemed to do no use. I packed us up and went to a walk-in clinic to get immediate medial help. Turned out it was a double ear infection with a fever.
When I would take my kids with a fever to the doctor…
- seizure (I would immediately call 911)
- high fever
- if they have a fever and haven’t gone to the bathroom within 12 hours (could be a sign of dehydration)
- fever for more than 2 days while on fever medication

Fast and easy to use–simply point the thermometer at the forehead to get an accurate reading in just 2 seconds.

Thank you for the information. I have a friend who is a new parent and just went through a minor scare… I will definitely send this her way. Thanks!
That is a great chart. I recently visited a new Mom as her son was sick and she was worried. She didn’t even have a thermometer. So I gave her one and told her what to watch for. Baby did not have a fever. Great tips.
Handy to chart to have. I have been debating about purchasing the Braun No touch + forehead thermometer to make taking temperatures easier.
I do like the The Braun No touch + forehead thermometer. When my kids were toddlers we only had normal thermometers, we’ve come a long way since then I’m glad to say 🙂
