‘Tis the season of spontaneous back yard gatherings of friends and family. “Hey, come back to our place – we’ll throw something on the Bar B Q” (that’s said a lot around here in Spring and Summer). Kids play, parents sip, everyone eats…it’s the perfect way to spend time together. I have a few ideas for your Bar B Q Menu which should cater to everyone’s tastes (and make it easy on the host!).
Fresh Garden Salad with Turkey Bacon
You can’t go wrong with a garden salad – it’s fresh, colourful and light. Crisp lettuce, grape tomatoes, sliced cukes and turkey bacon makes for a simple salad. (Tip: cook up a whole pack of bacon during the week and put it a container to be crumbled on salads for the weekend).
Pasta Salad with Black Olives
My husband came home from a trip to Italy with this recipe. Simply boil pasta to al dente, strain, add olive oil, salt, basil and black olives. That’s it. It takes 15 minutes and makes a very decent side dish.
Choice: Turkey Burgers or Turkey Franks
It’s always good to offer a choice to Bar B Q guests. The Pasta Salad above is perfect for vegetarians (as is the garden salad if you put the turkey bacon as a side). For the main, I like to offer two choices (so people can choose A, B or BOTH!).
My freezer and fridge are always stocked – pre-weekend – for Bar B Q staples such as these to have on hand for those last-minute invites. Pot luck has never been easier than with these.
Fruit Plate and Sweet Tray
Farm fresh strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe (yum…I’m hungry just thinking about it). A fruit plate is a great communal dish to set out at the end of a meal ( we put down one huge plate and lots of forks and everyone helps themselves family style). And to indulge the chocolate cravings in us all….a sweet tray of cookies and brownies….to allow a two bite treat.
Summer Bar B Qs are my pleasure (and not just because I get the night off stove duty)!

Yum, that pasta dish sounds like a perfect simple accompaniment for a BBQ! Your menu sounds like one that I would use, especially with the fruit platter and plate of sweets at the end.
Yum! That pasta dish caught my eye immediately.. It sounds simple, yet VERY much full of flavor!
