DIY – Kid-Friendly Sushi

January 24, 2013 17 Comments

This is activity and dinner is more of a Kid-Friendly California Roll than a Kid-Friendly Sushi (but my kid’s think anything with Nori and rice to be sushi). Easy, social and super fun this do-it-yourself  weekday dinner was a big hit in our house. Parent approved and kid-made…

DIY Kid_Friendly Sushi

Activity ButtonYou will need:

  • Nori (dried seaweed paper – available in most supermarkets)
  • Cooked rice (brown would be healthier than our kid-requested white rice pictured above)
  • Carrot sticks
  • Optional: pepper sticks, cucumber sticks, canned crab)

Directions:

Fold nori to make 4 squares (it breaks when you fold it so no knife or scissors required). Spoon your favourite edibles into the nori. Fold like a taco and eat!

A neighbour had us over for this kid-friendly sushi and it was so popular it was so popular my kids actually asked me again and again “Can we make sushi again?!”

Its an easy family meal and a fun menu addition to the kids’ table at your next dinner buffet.

Would you try it?

My son enjoys avocado rolls already…at not quite 7 months old! Living in Vancouver, it’s kind of a necessity to like sushi, no matter how old you are.

Great idea to roll it like a taco. I have actually avoided making my own sushi as I am clueless about actually rolling it properly!

I am not a fan of sushi but my daughter loves it. I make it as a treat for her once in a while and she is so appreciative of it. Actually, I think I will make it for her again this week. I love the look on her face when I give it to her. Thanks for the post and reminder 🙂

Very neat idea! I have to work on getting my partner to like sushi before I bother trying to make it for dinner, though.

Judging by all the kids I see at Japanese Sushi restaurants…kids seem to really enjoy this type of finger food! Your quick suggestion posted above is a great idea!

I love sushi and just said to my bestfriend that I could get my godson(her son) to like it to if given a chance.

I’m not a fan of “fish” sushi. Veggies are as daring as I go.

Sometimes when you make it at the table – you like it better. Kind of make it part of the dinner experience.
