“Pretend Play” isn’t happening around here. There is free-play. There is a bit of independent play. Side by side play with his sisters. However my little 9 month old just doesn’t do pretend play yet – which made me wonder if I’m somehow missing an important developmental, creative, life-skill growth thing here. Then I realized…ok he’s not pretending…but I imagine he’s imagining.
Reading is an everyday “play time” for my Thing 3. We sit. I read. He looks. He turns the pages. He hits the book. He tastes the cover (ok – not so recommended really). And I imagine he’s imaging the whole time.
Someone gave me that Fisher-Price book over there as a baby gift…and it really is one of his favourites (and who knew Fisher-Price made books?!). And it’s kinda cool that he can play with his sister’s hand-me-down little people figures in real life and then read them in his book (I bet there is a psychological/early childhood education/teachable moment term for this).
I can’t see him pretending yet. However, I’m hoping that reading stimulates his imagination – even in babyhood – preparing him for the pretending to come.
