This How To Make Slime Putty using just two ingredients – with no borax – is a great boredom buster for kids! It’s science and creativity in one activity. BONUS: the two ingredients are staples you already have in your kitchen. You’ll want to print/bookmark/pin this How to Make Slime Putty tutorial…
How to make Slime Putty
You will need:
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1/2 tbsp dish soap
Aside: My first book Boredom Busters has a GOO recipe which calls for Borax. I wrote that books= in the early slime days when Borax wasn’t a concern. I tested the GOO recipe multiple times and never had any negative results. That said, I know many parents/teachers/caregivers look for Borax-free slime recipes…thus, this easy slime putty.
Directions:
- In a small bowl (I used a resealable snack-sized container) put in 1 tablespoon of cornstarch.
- Add in 1/2 tablespoon of dish soap. (Trivia: 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon). I used an orange scented dish soap – and the putty had a pleasant orange scent!
- Mix together. At first, the mixture will look wet and clumpy. Stick with it. The more you mix it…the more slime putty-like it becomes.
- Done.
Idea: You could add a few drops of food colouring while you mix the slime putty to make coloured slime putty.
The consistency is interesting. Lay it flat on your hand and it’ll look wet and liquid-ish. But pull it apart and it breaks. Is it a liquid or is it a solid?
You can make a bigger batch of putty slime simply by increasing the measurements. Just remember it’s 1:1/2.
Bigger Batch Slime Putty Recipe: mix 1 cup of cornstarch with 1/2 cup of dish soap.
This creation doesn’t keep past 24 hours (even in a resealable container). It dries up and becomes quick crumbly (cornstarch does that). And no, don’t substitute flour for cornstarch (tried that in one test batch and it was a terrific failure).
The fact that you can make smaller batches means that this boredom buster can cost pennies for the activity time.
If you prefer an activity which has a long-lasting shelf-life…I suggest DIY Lipgloss only 2 ingredients
I am pretty pleased with this How To Make Slime Putty using just two ingredients – with no borax boredom buster idea. You could take the ingredients to the cottage, do it at home, or try it in your classroom. It would even make a fun birthday party activity (and put it in resealable containers and it becomes part of the loot bag!).
