When was the last time you gave your garage an update? Most people choose to bring in the professionals when they choose to upgrade their garage space and that’s usually because an upgrade to the garage requires expert knowledge. Your garage is as much a part of your home as any other room within it so you should want to make a point of upgrading it where you can, right?
The good news is that you don’t always need a professional. If you notice the garage door spring broken and the door refuses to open properly, then the best thing that you can really do is learn how to fix that yourself and save yourself the money. You can do so many things with your garage, from increasing the storage space to changing up the floor.
Top Ways to Upgrade Your Garage
- Give the garage door a makeover. The garage door can be changed out from what you have now to something completely different. Most garage doors can be pretty unattractive when you think about it, but you can swap a rolling metal door for a sliding tongue and groove panel door instead.
- Start building pallet storage. When it comes to creating storage space in the garage, you don’t have to do something typical such as plastic boxes or metal shelving if you don’t want to. If you have a garden or a yard, then the chances are high that you have plenty of tools, right? Well, a pallet organizer is a great option as you can attach it to the exposed wall studs of the garage and you can make sure that your pallet screws are long enough to get it attached correctly to the wall.
- Switch up the garage lights. Strip LED lights can make a big difference to the garage. You need lights to see what you’re doing, but garage door openers can help you to see when you want to drive in at night time.
- Applying epoxy over your painted garage floor. Did you know that you don’t have to have a professional come in to do this bit? Another coat of epoxy over paint is a great idea to refresh the flooring. You can do this by renting the equipment (you’ll need a floor buffer with a sanding screen), remove the paint and scuff the floor with the sander to create that texture you need, then thoroughly clean the flooring. If you’ve sanded the entire thing back, then it’s going to help the epoxy to stick properly.
- Add some magnetic boards. If you use your garage as a workshop as well as a place to park the car, then you have to consider adding magnetic boards. You should level the wall material first and use self-tapping sheet metal screws to put the boards up. From here, you can magnetize your tools so that they are stored correctly.
- Work to seal the holes in the garage. No one wants to have open holes in their garage, least of all you! If you are drilling any holes to run wires through your garage, then it’s vital that you have a sealant included. Fire-resistant caulk is a good place to begin, but you just have to ensure that you comply with both energy and fire codes.
- Consider ceiling storage. Everything in your garage is likely going to be in easy reach already which means that you’re probably wasting an awful lot of storage space.
Top Ways to Upgrade Your Garage
- Recycle laundry jugs. Do you go through a lot of laundry and conditioner jugs in your wash room? If you do, then recycling those jugs is a must! You don’t want to waste them and they’re the perfect item to rinse out and reuse for nails, screws and other small pieces. If you have plumbing parts and utility knives, storing them in waterproof containers is a great idea.
- Install some outlets. Ok, so this is probably the one thing that you’ll need a professional for! Outlets are a must in the garage, particularly if you’re going to be charging any power tools or using vacuum cleaners to clean the car out! Usually, a garage comes with at least one outlet but you can do better than that with the installation of more and that will help you to maximize the garage properly.
- Install organizers for your gear. Whether you are an avid fishing fan or you’re someone who has a lot of brooms and mops, hanging wall organizers can help you to keep everything in one place. It’ll look great, and all you need is some PVC piping and a foam swimming pool noodle.
- Give the entire place a lick of paint. Earlier, we talked about adding new epoxy to the flooring but what about the walls? Adding a new colour to the walls of your garage can change the way it looks entirely and if you plan to use it as a workshop or a painting studio rather than somewhere to park the car, then you can guarantee that it’s going to look more like an extension of the living space with colour on the walls.
- Add some insulation. The garage can be a pretty cold space in winter and baking hot in the summer, but you might not want to add a ducted heater or aircon unit. You should, instead, insulate it as best you can so that it maintains a good temperature all year around.
Your garage is an extension of your living space. Treat it as such and you’ll benefit!
