As a modern Mom, I support tech in class as learning tools. Do you know about Microsoft Learning Tools? Microsoft offers a number of tools that help students with different abilities in the classroom and at home. Around 80% of Canadian classrooms surveyed had at least one student formally identified as having a disability, and about 28% of the classes contained five or more students with disabilities. Here is how Microsoft is helping…
Microsoft In Education
February is Inclusive Education Month in Canada, and this year, Microsoft is working to highlight how a classroom that includes technology can strengthen inclusivity and ensure children, of all learning abilities, are set-up for success.
Microsoft is hosting free sessions to help teachers learn about the accessibility tools already built-in to Windows 10 and Office.
Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. This starts in the classroom, by recognizing the challenges teachers face when students in their classroom have a wide spectrum of abilities and by building tools that can effectively assist students with learning differences.
Microsoft believes in an equitable learning environment for students, which is why Inclusivity is built into Microsoft software from day one for no additional cost – because no one should be charged for their differences.
Interested in bringing inclusivity to your child’s classroom? Here are a few easy steps you can take to get started:
- OneNote has integrated learning tools that help improve comprehension. Built into Office, it’s one of the easiest things to get started with classroom accessibility.
- Look into the accessibility functions built into Office.
- Talk to your teachers about the workshops or register for one yourself here.
Think: people with dyslexia, students with low vision, those with cerebral palsy. Inclusive learning tools can be day-changers for our friends and family who are differently abled..
And it’s FREE! What a valuable asset to classrooms, school boards, and home schools. Not only can this open doors of accessibility and inclusivity for students…it can be a fantastic aid to educators; breaking down barriers.

At home, I use certain Microsoft tools to boost my son’s literacy skills. For example: he likes to create PowerPoint presentations on animals. He creates titles. Uses clipart to include photos (a cheetah image is his favourite). Writes copy. We print it out. Staple it; making it a book. And he often takes the results to school to present to his class the next day. Not only is he proud of his presentation, this reluctant reader and writer has read and written it all because of Microsoft software.
Technology surrounds us. I often silently applaud when I hear of teachers embracing tech as tools in their classroom. Computer and software literacy are life skills these days. And digital elements can sometimes be more engaging than traditional learning. Tech can bring communication, learning, and innovation into classrooms and to students of all ages and abilities. Inclusivity should start in education. Microsoft is helping make that happen all over the world.

I think using technology in schools will continue to allow educators to customize the instruction to each student. This is particularly important to those with disabilities.
