Andre De Grasse, Gillette, and #ThankYouMom
When did you first realize that Andre had the potential to be a high performance athlete?
Very evident when he played sports that he was competitive. Not chasing butterflies. Noticed the speed in him from when an infant.
Can you tell me about a time that you were particularly strong for Andre…
Have a lot of conversations about the path has could have taken. Happy to say because he was involved in sport through his life I’ve always been involved in his life.

What is the hardest part about being the mom of an Olympian?
All the attention we’re getting at the moment. See Andre as my son first – I don’t see him as Olympian. For me he’s just my kid. Even though he’s doing everything he’s doing – it’s overwhelming and difficult sometimes. Have to be strong for him all the time. Had a pretty simple normal life. Never envisioned this happening at this time in his life.
What is the trait that you most admire about your son?
Humbleness – even with everything that has happened. He is in awe – he is very grounded. Doesn’t let things bother him. Relentless in his field. He wants to do well – he works hard.
What’s one piece of advice you would offer to parents that are starting this journey with their kids – or potentially parents that haven’t even started the journey?
Sports are a way to help keep kids grounded. They should look at it as their kids staying active. Don’t look at it being competitive. Just exposed Andre to a bunch of different sports and he found what was best suited to him.
“At Gillette we understand that the journey towards precision is long, and often overlooked in favor of the end result,” said Kurt Iverson, Communications Leader, Gillette North America. “We’re proud of the razors that wedesign and manufacture because we understand that behind every great shave was years of precise engineering. The same is true for athletes preparing for the Olympic Games.”
