This Gratin Dauphinois – Awesome Scalloped Potatoes Recipe is creamy, cheesy, potato goodness if there ever was! Perfect side dish to beef, lamb, even pork. And it’s one of those recipes which tastes even better the next day as leftovers (if there are any!). Gratin Dauphinois – Awesome Scalloped Potatoes Recipe makes dinner a little more fancy…
Gratin Dauphinois – Awesome Scalloped Potatoes Recipe
- 5 large potatoes (I use Yukon Gold because they are buttery but you could also use Russet potatoes)
- Gruyere cheese (shredded)
- Garlic
- Butter (or margarine) – about 1-2 tsp
- Wax paper
- Whipping creme (yes, this is not low fat at all) 1 medium size container
- 2% milk (to top off the whipping creme)
- Nutmeg
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Take a large casserole dish (9 by 13)
- Crush 2 cloves of garlic and put them in the bottom of your dish
- Cut off a piece of wax paper – spread butter (or margarine) on it. Rub the bottom on the dish – rubbing in the garlic – along the bottom and up the sides of your dish. If any garlic sticks to the wax paper – spoon it off and put it back in the dish. Set dish aside.
- Peel potatoes. Wash potatoes. Slice potatoes (about the same thickness). Once all sliced – you can start layering.
- Layer 1: potatoes all along the bottom of your dish. Top with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Repeat layers until you have no more potatoes left.
- Pour whipping creme over potatoes. Add milk until there is liquid going halfway up the sides of the dish (you could just get a large container of whipping creme and use only that – I prefer to cut the creme with some milk myself). Be sure that the liquid only goes halfway up the dish (it will bubble and if you put it all the way to the top; covering the potatoes – it could spill over and make a mess in your oven).
- Sprinkle cheese over top.
- Bake for 1 hour (or until potatoes are knife tender).
My French mother-in-law taught me this Gratin Dauphinois – Awesome Scalloped Potatoes Recipe (back in the day – we would boil the potatoes in milk first – which WRECKED my pots – our modern family version eliminated that messy step).
