Caroline Fernandez – Silver Birch Nominee 2016! This is HUGE dear readers. HUGE! Oct. 15 (today) the Ontario Library Association announced the 2016 Forest of Reading nominees and I am included in the Silver Birch (non-fiction) category for my 1st book Boredom Busters (Cico Books, 2014).
This is one of those things where it is a tremendous honour to just be nominated (thousands of books are presented for consideration). Boredom Busters by Caroline Fernandez (that’s ME) was kid-tested (by my three children) and kid approved (by every kid who came for a play date!).
I encourage all ages to participate in the program (because books are awesome).
By the way – my favourite activity from Boredom Busters is the Coffee Filter Watercolors (because we created this Boredom Buster by accident – we were colouring on coffee filters, while sitting on the floor, as an art project and my baby son dropped his sippy cup and spilled water all over our art!). Accidents can be the best discoveries sometimes. 🙂
ABOUT THE FOREST OF READING
The Forest of Reading® is Canada’s largest recreational reading program! This initiative of the Ontario Library Association (OLA) offers eight reading programs to encourage a love of reading in people of all ages. The Forest helps celebrate Canadian books, publishers, authors and illustrators. More than 250,000 readers participate annually from their School and/or Public Library. All Ontarians/Canadians are invited to participate via their local public library, school library, or individually.
Here is the list of the 10 nominees for The Silver Birch Award (I’m honoured to be in such great company!)
The Silver Birch® Award
The Silver Birch® Award is comprised of three separate lists of Fiction, Non-Fiction, and an Express list that is made up of both Fiction and Non-Fiction, geared to the more reluctant reader. The Silver Birch® program is meant for readers aged 8 to 12, from Grades 3-6, with the Express list focusing on the lower grade levels and the Fiction and Non-Fiction focusing on the Grade 5 and 6 readers.
